Canada Express Entry Category-Based Immigration in 2024

Canada’s immigration process continues to evolve, with new Express Entry changes aimed at addressing critical skill shortages. Recently, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced category-based Express Entry draws to prioritize immigration in certain high-demand occupations. Following the passing of Bill C-19, these category-based selections kicked off in July, laying the groundwork for future draws with an increased number of invitations and lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores for targeted professions.

New Express Entry Categories

Canada has identified six priority categories to enhance its workforce and support economic growth:

  1. French-Language Proficiency
  2. Healthcare Occupations
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Occupations
  4. Trade Occupations
  5. Transport Occupations
  6. Agriculture and Agri-Food Occupations

These categories are central to Canada’s economy, with healthcare and STEM expected to see the highest demand due to the large variety of eligible occupations.

High-Demand Healthcare Occupations

With Canada’s aging population and low birth rate, the demand for healthcare professionals is critical. The healthcare sector, in particular, holds a large portion of job vacancies across Canada. In fact, Statistics Canada reported 144,500 open positions in healthcare and social assistance as of March 2023, with the highest shortages in Ontario and Quebec. Some of the most in-demand roles in healthcare include:

  • Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists (NOC 31112)
  • General Practitioners and Family Physicians (NOC 31102)
  • Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (NOC 31301)
  • Nurse Practitioners (NOC 31302)
  • Psychologists (NOC 31200)
  • Respiratory Therapists and Cardiopulmonary Technologists (NOC 32103)

If you’re a healthcare professional, Canada offers a rewarding path to advance your career while fulfilling a critical need in the community.

In-Demand STEM Occupations

Canada’s technology and innovation sectors have grown significantly, with the country ranking as a major global hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and tech startups. Cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal have attracted over 5,000 startups in recent years, creating strong demand for STEM professionals across the nation. The most sought-after roles include:

  • Software Engineers and Designers (NOC 21231)
  • Data Scientists (NOC 21211)
  • Cybersecurity Specialists (NOC 21220)
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NOC 21310)
  • Engineering Managers (NOC 20010)
  • Urban and Land Use Planners (NOC 21202)

For those with a background in STEM, Canada offers a wealth of opportunities in a progressive, innovation-driven economy.

Eligibility for Category-Based Immigration

To qualify for a category-based invitation, applicants must meet all criteria for the targeted category. Key eligibility criteria include:

  • French-Language Proficiency: A minimum score of 7 on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens in all four language abilities.
  • Healthcare, STEM, Trade, Transport, and Agriculture & Agri-Food Occupations: At least three years of work experience, including six months of continuous employment in one of the eligible National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes.

Canada will hold monthly draws for each category, giving skilled professionals an excellent opportunity to achieve permanent residency.
